Do you have a favorite hang-out spot in your home? I’m betting you may have said your front porch- it’s one of my favorites too. It’s the place I swing with my grandchildren and the place I find myself when talking on the phone- a spot where I can escape from the world for just a few minutes. What about you? Where do you escape? In today’s post, we’ll cover the best farmhouse porch ideas to make your outdoor space cozy and inviting.
After all, if it’s your escape or the place you like to spend time with friends and family, you want it to be beautiful, right?
These photos are of my front porch. I love to decorate in modern farmhouse style. I’ll show you the things I did to decorate the porch and the things I wish I’d done (and may still do in the future).
WHAT ITEMS DO I NEED TO DECORATE MY FARMHOUSE PORCH?
First things first, ask yourself, what do I need on my porch to make it not only a comfy farmhouse porch but an inviting space for my guests? I came up with a list of essential items for the front porch design. Here are the basics:
There were a few other incidentals along the way like rustic decor, candle holders, and a cozy blanket but I wanted to tackle the big things first because I knew the rest would fall into place.
TIP:
When shopping for your outdoor space, whether it’s a screened porch, an open porch, or an outdoor room, always consider weather conditions. Rain, snow, wind, heat, humidity, and cold affect furniture and decor. Choose items that can withstand extreme conditions.

Welcoming Front Door
Hands down the front door area is the most important feature of your porch. It’s the thing everyone sees when visiting your home- their first impression. Luckily, it’s an easy spot to show off your farmhouse decor. (Article may contain affiliate links. Full disclosure at the end of the post.)

If you’re on a limited budget, I recommend 2 items for your farmhouse front porch, a large door wreath, and a doormat. Together, these two items can make a big impact and they won’t break the bank.

OUTDOOR RUG
One of the best ways to incorporate a pop of color into your porch is to add an outdoor rug. Rugs make your outdoor space cozy. The porch rugs below come from an Etsy shop called DoorMat Decor. They’ve got tons of cool rugs in their shop in all different sizes.
I used two rugs for my front porch. One was a Brazilian cowhide rug like the one below. It’s soft and holds up well. I wouldn’t call it an outdoor rug but honestly I haven’t had any problems using it on my covered porch and I think it’s downright neat!
I bought the black and white rug below because of my dog Maggie, it has her coloring. Little did I know when I bought it that it would be her favorite porch spot. If it wasn’t for her red collar, I don’t think you’d even see her- especially in the photo on the left. Sometimes I think she believes she’s hanging out with her brothers and sisters.
PORCH SWING
Every country-style porch needs a swing. For years we had a black wooden swing but the weather finally got the best of it and it needed replacing. This go-round I decided to go with a white swing and use decorative pillows to accent.
Below is a beautiful white porch swing that’s made of recycled plastics with a real wood look. It’s weatherproof and comes in several colors so you don’t have to paint it. Best of all it’s made in the USA. Next spring I’m going to switch over to one of these swings. They don’t need replacing as much as a wooden swing does.

SWING CUSHION
A porch swing cushion offers more color to the porch. Below is a selection of swing cushions from Amazon that come in all kinds of colors and sizes.

Rocking chairs and porches go hand-in-hand, right?
I’ve had my rockers for a while now, they’re natural wood. When I first got them I was in that “paint everything-leave nothing unpainted” phase but I decided against painting them and I’m glad I did. They give a natural contrast to the white brick. Each season I pressure wash them and they look brand new again. What about you, would you rather have natural rocking chairs or painted ones?
I bought my rocking chairs at The Cracker Barrel but couldn’t find any natural wood rockers online. I did find this beautiful oak rocking chair with a polyurethane finish on Amazon- great quality.
When choosing your rockers, consider the area. Do the rocking chairs on your porch back up against a painted brick wall? You may want to choose a more natural rocker with no paint.
Does your house have siding or wood? Then try a painted rocking chair to bring in pops of color.
Let’s get real here though, have you ever seen a rocking chair on a front porch you didn’t like? You’ll be safe with whatever choice you make.

WICKER CHAIR
Another great idea is to use a wicker chair for the porch, wicker never seems to go out of style. If you have a screened-in porch or a sunroom, you can use the original wicker chairs made of cane but if your chairs will be exposed to weather, you probably need to stick to the wicker chairs made of resin.

The porch chairs above are made of resin with a powder-coated steel frame. They’re perfect for outdoor use. They’re stackable, come in a variety of colors and easy to keep clean. You can even hose them down.
BENCH
The bench I used on the porch is one of my all-time favorites. It’s an old church bench that my Mom found at an antique store. I didn’t refinish it or anything- just left it as is and I think it’s perfect. It’s kind of small so it fits my narrow porch nicely. It’s one of my granddaughter’s favorite spots.
Below is a nice porch bench featured on Amazon. The bench is grey, made of acacia wood, and is versatile- useful for most any porch. It’s got a 550 lb seating capacity and can fit up to 3 people.
RATTAN CHAIR
Rattan is a type of cane from a tree that’s been fashioned into beautiful furniture. Using rattan chairs is one of the best front porch ideas. Here’s a nice set of rattan chairs with a decorative table to match.

FARMHOUSE SIGN, DECORATIVE WALL HANGING, OR WELCOME SIGN
Another way to give your front porch a real farmhouse feel is through accessories. Accessories like pillows, welcome signs, lanterns, and wall hangings bring everything together – they’re the cherry on top.

This reversible farmhouse wooden sign works nicely for the front porch. It’s made of pine, stands almost 5 feet tall, and says Welcome on one side and Home Sweet Home on the other. The farmhouse sign comes with a built-in hanger and is made to either hang on the wall or lean against the porch, either way, it’s perfectly convenient for a small or large space.
There’s no better way to give off that farmhouse vibe than with windmill wall decor. This large galvanized windmill is 32″ wide which is a good size for the porch. Your porch wall decor needs to be a substantial size so you can see it from the front yard and better yet from the road. The windmill comes in several sizes and colors for you to choose from.

DECORATIVE COFFEE TABLE OR SIDE TABLE
A small coffee table is ideal for a country-style porch- it’s the perfect place to set your morning brew. This little table stands at 18″ and comes in several colors.
PLANTERS
Natural color is an important part of your front porch. By natural, I mean the greenery of plants or the color of flowers. They make the porch welcoming and beautiful.

I’m going to be honest here – I Cannot Grow A Plant, and I’m not kidding. I’m so jealous of you if you’ve been blessed with a green thumb. The only plants I can keep alive are ferns.
Luckily they look great on the porch. I like to put my ferns in planters. Two planters are a beautiful way to frame your front door or a bench.
The tall planters below are made of resin. They’re a great choice if you like modern farmhouse style.
The double wooden planter below stands 21″ tall and is made of fir. What a great way to show off your plants and flowers.
TIP:
Planters need a little bit of weight to them. If they’re too light, they tip over with the least bit of wind.

Last but not least- what’s a farmhouse-style porch without pillows?

If you go with decorative pillows (above) that aren’t weatherproof, you’ll need to take special care so they won’t be damaged by rough weather.
If you’d rather not worry about weather conditions, you’ll need to choose a weatherproof pillow like the 18″ x 18″ porch pillow covers below. These are ideal for your outdoor space – they’re waterproof, washable, and made with a zipper so you can easily change them out. If you get bored with the color, unzip it and throw another cover on the pillow for a whole new look.
Here are some waterproof pillow inserts for the porch pillow covers. They’re offered in sets of 2 or 4 and several different sizes. By the way, I’m assuming the raindrops on the photos are trying to show that they’re waterproof. The raindrops are not included on the pillows – ha!
